Almost 40 million people in the United State face the difficulty of hunger or simply not having enough to food to sustain a healthy existence. Of this staggering number, nearly 11 million are children and close to 6 million are seniors who also bare the burden of having very little, or not enough. This stats are particularly disheartenling when we consider that we (America) consigns over 100 billion pounds of its “edible” commodities to landfills every year1. God charges us with helping those who are in need such vital resources. The book of Matthew states in verse 25:34-40 (KJV) “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. The vision of Program Director Miranda Quarles and a dedicated team of volunteers, Greater Refuge Church of Christ is doing its part heed the call of love and compassion to our brothers and sister. In a country that discards enough food to end hunger, no one should go hungry or not have enough to eat.
